Happy Holidays and welcome to the December edition of Conference Connection.
If you're looking for a unique and meaningful way to spend the holidays, we'd like to suggest the Sit for Change Meditation Marathon!
Sit for Change is a global 10-day meditation marathon designed to raise awareness of and financial assistance for organizations focused on human rights, families and the environment.
More information can be found on their website at www.SitforChange.org.
Additionally, we know that the yoga community is very giving. Unfortunately, as you've undoubtedly read in the press, not all non-profits are equal.
If you're unsure about a charitable organization, you can quickly learn more about them at www.charitynavigator.org.
Charity Navigator will quickly show you (based on IRS tax regulations) how much of your donation goes to the actual cause.

Due to popular demand, we've added a one-day Beginners' Conference on Monday, January 16th. The other two Beginners' Conferences have already sold out.
This newly added one-day event is perfect for your friends who are new to yoga (it also makes a great holiday gift!)

tickets are available for our Saturday night event Yoga Trance Dance with Shiva Rea and DJ Dragonfly on January 14, 2006 @ 8:00pm, for $20.

The San Francisco message board is open for ride sharing and room sharing options. Several people are looking for roommates.

Editor's Note: Shiva will be teaching at all three 2006 Yoga Journal Conferences. Click here to see her
San Francisco classes. Click here for Boston. She will also be leading the Saturday evening Trance Dance event in San Francisco.
Recently, when asked why she does yoga,
Shiva Rea replied, "I am done with doing yoga and never advocate that anyone do yoga."
Instead, Shiva encourages being yoga - allowing the natural state of yoga to emerge and evolve from within. This answer honors the core teachings that have informed her diverse life journey from growing up on the ocean, to meeting holy people in unexpected places, experiencing her first teacher training with Erich Schiffman in 1990, pilgrimages in India, teaching people of all walks of life all over the globe, and her current immersion in the streams of Kashmiri Shavisim through her root teacher Daniel Odier, and his yogini teacher Lalita Devi.
She has been teaching for the last fourteen years in Los Angeles where she has been a creative force in the development of vinyasa flow yoga worldwide. She brings classical teachers of yoga to Los Angeles, collaborates with musicians and kirtan artists on retreats and music projects, initiates yogini conferences for women and is a creative advisor with Marika for their Shiva-Shakti yoga inspired clothing and Exhale MindBody Spa. Her "indie" DVD project, Yoga Shakti, filmed in the Malidives and India, has won numerous awards.
Here are some lesser know facts that you might not know about Shiva:
- Shiva was born on the ocean in Hermosa Beach.
- While her father was in the art department at UC Berkeley, she was the only white girl in her entire elementary school in Oakland, CA. She danced the Maypole Dance with her class to the soundtrack of the movie, "Shaft".
- She moved to Memphis, TN for high school and adopted the Mississippi River as her new teacher. Other teachers were the great blues singer, Ruby Wilson and the Rev. Al Green.
- At thirteen, Shiva experienced the power of global consciousness on her first trip to London and then lived in Florence, Italy for a summer studying Italian Renaissance Art when she was sixteen.
- She left home at seventeen to do volunteer work in village development in Kenya and Zambia where she lived for a year and a half, learning Swahili and living in earthen huts while assisting in local development.
- Shiva received her B.A. and M.A. from UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures where she graduated magna cum laude.
- She has studied many traditional dance forms from Bharata Natayam to Butoh, Hatian Vodoun to Javanese Court Dance at UCLA and in their countries of origin. Along with her experience of sahaja or spontaneous arising of yoga, this led to the formation of yoga trance dance as a movement meditation ritual for everybody.
- She started the environmental activist festival, Honoring the Sea, which has become part of the Los Angeles Festival.
- She has been married for seventeen years. She and her husband, James Bailey, took a two-year honeymoon that included circling the globe, living in Ghana and India with lots of time to get to know all the sides of each other during long bus and train rides with the locals.
- Her greatest loss was of her mother to brain cancer. Her son Jai is named after her mother, Victoria. Her father, Kevin often joins her family on retreats as a cosmic jester.
- Her son Jai played his first tabla note at the age of three months. He has been to 21 countries so far as a global citizen.
- Shiva and James have been to India five times on pilgrimage and studying with many teachers in Tibetan Buddhism, Bhakti, Ayurveda, Tantra and Krisnamacharya's lineage from Mysore to Chennai.
- Her current passions include teaching yoga to 2nd graders, surfing, aerial dance, poi, kalarippayatu (martial art form of kerala), quantum physics for artists, the new cosmology of the body, ayurvedic cooking and massage and the sva dharma project for empowering youth.
