Welcome to the February edition of Conference Connection.
This month we asked Mary Dunn, one of our upcoming Boston Conference presenters, to share her experience of becoming a yoga instructor - an experience that started by her mother taking her to a BKS Iyengar class in 1974!
Also, we're excited to feature a new exclusive conference alumni column by Dayna Macy. This month's column is titled, "Veggies for Enlightenment" and talks about the best veggies to eat in late winter.
We'll also recap the recent San Francisco Conference with photos and our conference blog.
And, here's the inside scoop on what's coming up in the April/May edition of Yoga Journal: Yoga & Ambition, Imagine a Vegetarian World, and Yoga for Scoliosis. Look for it on newsstands soon!
Finally, don't forget the Early Bird discount for the 2006 Boston Conference ends March 10th.
Namaste,

After you've been practicing yoga for a while, you might notice a difference in your eating habits. You begin noticing how certain foods affect you some make you feel vibrant and alive, others heavy and dull. Perhaps you start to crave certain fruits or vegetables,
or your body tells you to drink more water.
This is no accident. Yoga helps the body awaken in all ways, including what, when and how we eat. Classic yoga texts describe the five sheaths of the body. The first and outermost is known as the Anamaya Kosha, which literally translates to the food sheath.
It can also be thought of as the physical body. The sheaths, as you move inward, become more subtle, until you reach the Bliss sheath,
which is pure consciousness, or enlightenment. In yoga, we cannot achieve higher states of consciousness unless our physical bodies are well-fed and nourished.
A well-fed body is one that eats in tune with the seasons. It's not optimal for most of us to eat a raw food diet in the cold winter months, just as it feels off to eat heavy, calorie-dense foods in the hot months of summer.
February is a transition month, not fully winter and not yet spring. Visit any farmer's market and you'll see vegetables that have a foot in both seasons beautiful root vegetables brilliant orange carrots,
magenta beets, creamy-white turnips (don't bypass your beet and turnip greens they're wonderful!).
You'll also see all sorts of salad greens, and the nutrientdense leafy greenskale, chard, and sorrel. Depending on where you live, you might even see the first of spring asparagus.
These vegetables are deeply nourishing, and totally delicious. Roasting root vegetables with a little bit of olive oil and salt brings out their inherent sweetness. Sauteing greens with some fresh garlic, olive oil, and lemon is simple and satisfying.
You might have grown up with your mom or dad telling you to eat your vegetables.
They were right, of course. But now as yoga practitioners, you have another good reason each bite might just bring you one step closer to enlightenment!

Editor's Note: Mary will be teaching at the 2006 Yoga Journal Boston Conference.
Click here to see her classes.
Mary became a yoga practitioner after her mother brought her to classes with Sri BKS Iyengar in 1974. In those classes Mary glimpsed the knowledge and transformation made possible through the practice of yoga.
Mary felt the impact of the man who was to become her teacher as he led the class through postures, shaping, refining, and deepening the teaching. "He was the most amazing teacher I had ever experienced. I was in awe of the way this art and science revealed new dimensions within myself and others. Iyengar told us what to do, and,
molding our bodies and concentrating our minds, took us through states of inquiry, intensity, and sublime serenity. He showed us that reaching the heart and the soul is possible by taking us through the doorway of asana and pranayama."
Mary took the inspiration of her first classes and wove the study of yoga into her life. She went to Pune, India for the first intensive taught by Iyengar at his Institute and has continued to go time after time to enhance her knowledge of yoga.
Mary has actively taught all over the world and continuously serves the growing Iyengar yoga community. She was the founding inspiration of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York where she is presently a senior teacher.
Mary teaches practitioners and teachers to plumb the depth of the subject. She draws from nature, daily life, and keen observations of humanity. She follows the developing knowledge of the sciences and medicine and weaves the great questions of philosophy into her teaching.
Mary has two daughters and three grandchildren. She cherishes the time she has with them and delights in their lives. She counts herself fortunate to share life with her family and close friends and cultivates an active participation in learning about the world.
She leads small groups to learn from new cultures and distant places while cultivating a yoga practice to discover the world within.
She finds humor often and in unexpected corners.
"Learning is what it is all about, and learning is limitless. I find new applications of transcendent principles every day find and practice in yoga is practice in living an examined life."
